Do women really need to eat any differently than men?

On Oct 16th, the World Food Day, lets focus on ingraining healthy eating habits. Did you know that good nutrition not only provides you energy but also lifts your mood by fighting stress, reduces PMS, boosts fertility, and even makes pregnancy & nursing easier for you?

Tips to Keep You on Your Toes

  • Filling your plate: Fill a large section of your plate with green leafy veggies and fruits. Also include whole grains, and protein-rich beans or legumes for filling fiber that will keep you going whole day.
  • Go the Milky Way: Try to bone up on your calcium intake. Being a woman, you need more calcium than men to maintain bone health. Milk and other dairy products are rich in calcium. Also, consider plant-based calcium sources like beans, broccoli, sprouts etc.
  • No need to compete men for drink: Alcohol interferes with everything healthy including your appetite & sleep. Is boozing really worth it?
  • Stop being a regular at the cafe: Excessive caffeine consumption plays with your hormonal levels and even causes the loss of calcium. Start by cutting down your daily caffeine intake by half.
  • Never miss your breakfast: Pep up your metabolism rate and energy level right from the morning by having a healthy breakfast every day. Studies reveal that women who eat their breakfast regularly weigh lesser than those who mostly skip it.
  • Eat on regular intervals: Ideally, you must eat every 2-3 hours. But, if it is difficult then you must easy at least after every 3-4 hour gap. Long breaks between meals are not recommended for good health.
  • You are not a junk basket: Your body is not a junk basket to keep putting into it the junk food. As the name suggests, junk food is a total junk. Goes without saying that having junk food is an unhealthy choice.

World Mental Health Day – Let’s Make the World Saner!

“Depression: A Global Crisis”…. World Mental Health Day raises public awareness about mental health issues. The day promotes open discussion of mental disorders, and investments in prevention, promotion and treatment services. (Source Courtesy: WHO – World Health Organisation)

Let’s celebrate the ‘World Mental Health Day’ with more sanity and seriousness and try to build awareness, this time around for depression, a commonly prevalent disorder that is making many women lose the joy of living. Yearly, more than 350 million people around the globe report to have depression symptoms. Carrying the burden of disease, many people cannot get access to the treatment of this curable disease. Only 10% of depression patients are known to receive the right and timely treatment.

If you tend to get bouts of depression or mood swings from time to time, it is high time you sit up & do something about it, before these emotional upheavals swallow you whole. Slowly even your productivity in daily tasks may begin to go downhill. No matter what, you owe yourself  happiness.

Depression is a real illness, but it can be prevented. A few suggestions that will help you in this regard are as follows:

  • Inculcate some regular exercise in your daily routine.
  • Eat healthy. Snack on fruits, salads etc in between meals.
  • Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga and meditation.
  • Maintain healthy sleeping habit and get around 8hours of sleep daily.
  • While multi-tasking to juggle family & work, keep an open communication with your spouse, other family members & peers.
  • Limit alcohol intake or if possible, abstain from it. Remember, you are not the only one dealing with it.
  • Being around positive people will help you learn positive ways of dealing with a given situation.

You need to accept that depression cannot be driven away overnight. Expect your mood to change gradually. It is commonly observed that sleep and appetite improves before your depressed mood is boosted.

Please feel free to share how you cope with stress & depression? You may end up helping another suffering from the same.

International Men’s Health Week advocates women to make moves of wisdom for the men in their lives

A British study has established that 1 in 3 men tend to neglect bad health in the hope that the ailment will ‘disappear’ over time. This tendency is even glorified as a masculine thing.

As a woman, you must be too familiar with this attitude. Plenty of you are sure to have stories of dragging their spouses for health checks because you alone know how vulnerable men are making themselves by refusing to act on indications of ill health. The rationale of International Men’s Health Week is to increase and reinforce the understanding of preventable health issues and promote early detection and cure of illnesses among men and boys.

Are you aware of top men’s health terrors and their triggers? Well, the list is not shocking and includes commonly referred to diseases such as stroke, heart attack, diabetes, cancer, injuries, AIDS, prostate cancer etc. Triggers to emotional and physical conditions can range from the simplest thing as stress to ignorance towards mild symptoms, sedentary lifestyle, alcoholism, smoking, engaging in casual sex and work pressure.

Prevention is a priority not an option. When was the last time men in your household had a checkup? Skipping checkups is not a way to save cash. What if it leads to something severe simply because they had skipped a medical? Yes, they always insist that they feel fine, but the call for yearly health checks still stands. Some illnesses and conditions don’t even have symptoms, making you more likely to miss an early diagnosis and treatment.

We urge you to keep up with the numbers for BP, sugar level, cholesterol, body mass index, or anything else of the men in your family and keep them informed. Consult a doctor on the kind of tests they should take and how often. The rat race of modern times gives men hardly any time to think, let alone worry about their health. Unfortunately, most men consider it natural being tired and oversleeping on weekends. Can you ensure this is followed in your house?

An urge to sleep throughout the day, recurrent headaches, nervousness, exhaustion, anxiety etc are not signs of a healthy body. In fact, the body is screaming – ‘HELP!!!’ through these symptoms. How do you intend to educate them on this? It is time for men to chuck the traditional linkage of health and masculinity and ASK for & GET help when needed! Do you agree?
