New Year Health Resolutions to Pledge on, in ’2013

Let us beckon 2013 with a fresh pledge to living healthy. The following healthy resolutions, if you adopt, are sure to keep you happily fit and gorgeous, both inside and out.

Rein your portions

Wish to right size your shape? Mindless binge eating is often the villain. Start right sizing your food portions by using smaller dishes. Yes, the smaller your platters are, the more you lose that extra weight. And instead of serving directly from the main bowl, take some into a small dish and put away the main bowl.

Staying Active

Instead of sighing jealously at those naturally thin people, observe their lifestyle. They are most likely to share a great liking for being physically active. Aim for moderate intense activity like brisk walking for atleast 30 minutes per day. This, you can squeeze in your busy schedule easily- like 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes after lunch and and another 10 minutes after office.

Cutting down on salt

Now the recommended limit of salt consumption per day is 1 teaspoon. And you know that’s way less than your daily intake. Besides making your stomach feel all bloated, this habit can shoot up your BP. Processed foods are the most dangerous as they use salt as preservative. Remember to check labels carefully before you give it for billing.

Piling on the antioxidants

Do you know why we need antioxidants? When foods are digested, body releases harmful free radicals that can eventually lead to heart burn, cancer etc. Antioxidant-rich foods like orange, tea, pomegranates etc are important to defend your body from these free radicals.

Flossing Daily

Oral Hygiene is horribly underrated. But bacteria in mouth can cause serious health risks. Flossing daily can ward off bacteria; it is a simple enough practice to ingrain with long term benefits to your dental health.

But all these resolutions will go down the drain if your expectations from yourself are far from healthy. For example, don’t expect a drastic change in your figure soon after you started portion-controlling and exercising. Just as it took your body to build-up fats, it will take time to lose it too. So if your inner-spirit tends to be a bit mean to you, just bash it with healthy acceptance. Let that be your founding stone to all your healthy New Year Resolutions.

Personal health in the concrete jungle – Snack your daily habit

Is there anything new that needs to be focused on? Not really. You know very well how to take care of yourself. But you slip. Or some habits might just have zoomed out of focus due to the frenzied lifestyle. Let’s keep it to the basic four. Healthy eating, regular physical activities, sound sleep and of course stress busting. Proper sprucing and healthy personal habits can help you fend off diseases as well as feel good about yourself.

Creat Your Daily Health Plan

Wonder why you don’t lose weight even after eating healthy and slogging in the gym? Sleeplessness. Women are twice as likely as men to have problems falling or staying asleep. At least 7-8 hours of shut-eye is fundamental and no compromise on that. Have dinner atleast 2 hours prior to sleeping and have a cup of warm milk before you hit the bed. Meditation also works. This is the keystone of your total well being.

Yes, there is something called ‘low stress’ diet, which is basically food low in sugar, starch and bad fat. Fruits and veggies with adequate hydration will of course take the top hat in your diet sheet. If your face falls at the sight of veggies, you can find lots of recipes on internet that are both healthy and tasty. Are you considering supplements? Not a bad idea if you are deficient, but take it after consulting with your doctor. And oh, very importantly, laugh. It is a slap to most of your stresses.  It lessens your blood pressure and relaxes you.

Make A Daily Fit Log

Physical activities are moving towards nonexistence day by day. Human body is not designed to stay glued in one place except at the time of nature’s call. And it protests with flabs on belly and fats on thighs at first. Then if you still do not respond move on to more stringent measures. Why not merge your activity-quota for the day with your hobbies? You do have a hobby, right? It is real sad if you do not have any, you know. No, you can’t blame packed schedule for this. Hobbies present a slice of job-free and duty-free time. It is your me-time. Reading, dancing, practicing a sport, gardening, spending time with kids, walks, needlework- options are endless. And no man is born as good-for-nothing. Find what you enjoy and indulge.

Fast food culture & obesity; story of a killer lifestyle

Statistics suggest that there are some 35 million obese people in India. Yet, obesity is not seen as a disease here; one of the many ironies of Indian health scenario. The way it has creepily crawled to the top 10 lifestyle problems of modern India is astounding. And this is all the more reason to help alert and educate those who (read majority) are stuck to their couches of just how grim the situation has become. Obesity does not simply take a toll on the physical health but is also a free-ticket to psychological problems like depression, anxiety etc. Sadly, it’s no secret that we all exist in a somewhat callous world full of narrow mindedness, discrimination and unawareness.

Impact of Lifestyle and Imbalance Diet.

Did you know that more than 25 medical conditions or complications are linked to obesity? Diabetes, high BP, cholesterol, heart attack and stroke top the list. Simply put, obesity is the direct upshot consuming more calories than you burn. These ‘extras’ then lead to energy imbalance. Fast food culture being the most popular cause in our fast-paced world is the main convict; it is rich in calories and poor in nutrients. It may suit your schedule perfectly not your body. Environment, peer pressure, genetics’ all these play a role in undermining your say in your weight. But while even obesity due to genetics can be thwarted by your determination and will power, what is peer pressure. Finally, it all comes down to your ability to say no.

Learn to SAY NO when your peers invite you for pizza-burger bash.

Learn to SAY NO to the second piece of burfee or chocolate.

And most of all learn to SAY NO to yourself.
